New product launch package I visually designed for the Ignite Instrument

Memorable Contributions

There were several projects I worked on during my time at PNI. However, I will only touch base on three projects I felt made the most memorable contribution.

01 | Interactive Customer Profiles

02 | Product Launch

The second of two product launches I was apart of was for the companies highest selling product that underwent visual and physical modifications. I created the products logo, box design and launch video.

03 | Application Note Redesign

The new branding created for the most recent product, sparked the redesign of several scientific booklets. I worked closely with the companies technical writer to better understand how to redesign the booklets, while following the new branding guidelines I had established.

Redesigned Sales Funnel for PNI

Exploring a Layout

The customer persona needed to be easy to use and include interactivity. The document was intended to be one page containing several sections with varying amounts of information. I began by splitting my page by three sections with the intention of keeping all desirable information within its own category.

Customer Profile Design Choice

Interactivity

Initially it was unclear if this document was going to be a website or a document. I knew indesign had several interactive features so I chose to explore inDesign's interactive button capabilities. During the testing phase of this document I focused on the hide and show  buttons which allowed all the information to display on one page of the document.

However, due to unforeseen circumstances I soon realized that incorporating all the information within one page would not be possible. Each section within the document contained several hyperlinks and unfortunately these links would not work with the button's hide and show method.

The finalized document contained multiple pages (which included the hyperlinks) and kept an area that used the hide and show method. This change gave users the opportunity to navigate the document in a way that best suited their needs. It also afforded the possibility of more information to be added as I could adjust the dimensions of each page.

Product Launch Box for the Ignite

Logo Design

The final logo encompassed the design style I had started to establish during my time at Precision Nanosystems Inc (PNI). Although simple it contained the use of an oblong shape which captured an element of the companies logo and branding style.

Package Design

The most exciting part of this experience was coming together with a box design for the new product. The box would be a unique design in comparison to other packaging done for other instruments and showcase the new branding for the company. I needed to pay attention to the sizing of various elements on the box to ensure they were visible and the appropriate size in relation to the boxes size. Once the physical box had been designed it was a question of creating something that could also accentuate the physical appeal of the box.

Product Launch Video

The final step of this product launch was to put together a video that would ignite excitement amongst the potential and old customers of Precision NanoSytems. The vision was to show the evolution of products before the ignite which eventually lead to the updated development of this new product. I wanted to showcase the previous instruments and exhibit them rotating and slowly transforming into the next machine. I was able to do this by using a turn table and someone to assist me in manually rotating the table to produce the turning motion seen in the video.

Establishing a Base

I wanted to keep the idea of a solid block of colour throughout the entire booklet. I wanted to establish a base for which the reader could take a break on. I think the block of colour within the binding creates a spread break. All the table of contents and introductory pages for different sections in the booklets followed this format.

Challenging the Norm

Originally, the application notes were more focused on content, rather then design. In total the company had over 10 of these application notes which were not used by the sales team or being downloaded by consumers online. Although, these notes contained rich data, they were not being looked at due to poor legibility and lack of visual cues to capture the readers attention. With the redesign of these I wanted to increase legibility and capture the readers attention through the prominent use of colour amongst the different application notes. The Column of colour was used to showcase relevant articles recommended and key takeaways on the content shown.

My Journey

During my time at PNI I gained confidence in my skills and voicing my opinions during projects and meetings. It was exciting to contribute to the redesign of the companies branding style and find new ways to represent the essence of the company. I learned to work within tight deadlines, sacrificing design to content/physical constraints and that minimal design can standout when distributed properly. Overall, I was grateful to have made a contribution to such a fast growing and evolving company.
